Bakhchisarai palace

Every year up to half a million tourists come here. At one time Bakhchisarai was the capital of the Crimean Khanate. The khan`s palace still stands in the museum of history and archeology. Work on the palace buildings and grounds was started at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The complex includes the khan`s palace and court room, the harem, courtyards, the falcons` tower, courtyards, gardens and mausoleums. The palace`s construction and reconstruction went on several centuries.

In the northeast corner of the so-called Fountain Courtyard stands a fountain with the exotic name of “Fountain of Tears”. It was built in 1764 by the Iranian master Omer by order of Khan Krym-Girey in memory of his favourite wife. Many legends are connected with this fountain. Some of them served as the theme of the long poems “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” by Alexander Pushkin and “Crimean Sonnets” by Adam Mickiewicz.
In itself the fountain is higly symbolic. At the top is a five-petalled flower carved in marble whose centre resembles a human eye shedding tears. These fill a marble bowl, which symbolizes the heart. The water then overflows into two small bowls, tears bring relief. But this relief is only temporary: once more the water from the two small bowls gathers in a large one lying beneath them. And so forth and so on – sorrow forever alternates with relief.
