Underground works for submarines repair in Balaklava
Formerly secret zone – Balaklava – always attracted huge attention of foreigners. After establishment of independent Ukraine, forces and submarines were called away that gave a unique possibility to see a former property of powerful Soviet Union.
825 ÃÃÓ is a name of Balaklava submarines repair underground works.

Hypothetically if in the middle of Balaklava bay a nuclear megaton bomb blew up, then as well as fiery squall, and horrible radiation, a water column would arise up to tens meters and swallow hundreds tons of sea water up in the bay gorge. Sea level would arise and overflow all alive. Therefore the main military task was to protect navy and submarines in case of nuclear explosion.

That's why in 1954 a special plan of building underground protecting constructions such as works, refrigerators, hospitals, mechanical bakery, and ammunitions and food deposition, was made. A half of all inhabitants and fleet reserves could be hidden and saved by that plan.

The underground works was carved (made) in superhard (-firm) rock. There was a room for seven submarines and 70 meters dock. An entry was camouflaged so good that even now you can not find without a guide.
A total square of all underground structures is over 10.000 squared meters. A height of some of them reaches a height of three stores house.

Who built that unique erection? Navy forces made primary works. A military underground construction battalion was a labor power. And a Moscow subway collective made all the fundamental work.
Nowadays it's a memorial structure of engineer-technical art of former Soviet Union. It's open for excursions. |
